Solving Applied EPIC Issue: Instance Already Running

When you sit down at your desk (or your kitchen table...I mean work from home desk) and power up your computer, ready to begin your days work. Just to run into an error message. Ugh, the frustration. You’re ready to work and just want to begin but can’t. Now you get to start your day doing some troubleshooting instead of let’s say benefits management.

So, what’s the problem and how do you fix it?



The Problem

A problem we’ve seen recently with some of our insurance clients who use Applied EPIC is that they get an error message stating that another instance of this application is already running.

Huh?

This may be because it is already running in the background. When you start up your computer, does EPIC automatically begin running?  Before you try out the following solutions ensure that EPIC is not already open behind the windows you have up.

(Note: The following solutions should work with other applications, EPIC is just an example we’ve seen recently.)


Solution 1 - Task Manager

First, let’s try closing the already running program from the task manager.

To do so:

  1. Press Ctrl, Alt, Delete on your keyboard at the same time

  2. Open the Task Manager

  3. Select the Applications tab

  4. Choose Applied EPIC

  5. Select End Task

Once the task has ended, go ahead and open it now. If EPIC was not already running, go to solution number two.


Solution 2 - Uninstall to Re-Install

Alright, that didn’t work, on to solution number two. We are going to uninstall the program and re-install it.

To do so:

  1. Go to your search bar on your computer

  2. Search for your Settings

  3. Select Apps

  4. Use the search bar or scroll through your list of apps to find Applied EPIC

  5. Click on Applied EPIC

  6. Select Uninstall

  7. When the prompt opens, select Uninstall again

After uninstalling EPIC, re-install the software. Once the installation is complete, open the application.


Solution 3 - Reach Out to an MSP

When the above fails, it’s time to reach out to your managed service provider (MSP) or I.T. department. By reaching out to a professional to solve your issue, you won’t have to spend any more time than you should on pesky error messages like this one you are trying to solve right now.  

A study done in 2016, found that the average US worker wastes 22 minutes a day dealing with I.T. related issues. While this number may seem like a small part of your day if you add that up for a working week you get 110 minutes. So, just under two hours a week per employee attempting to troubleshoot computer issues. This number increases if they can’t solve the issue on their own and then have to reach out to someone for help.

In Conclusion

When you can solve tech problems on your own, that’s great! But, when it’s taking you hours to even more than thirty minutes to get rid of an error message, it’s time to reach out for help.
