Sitting at a desk for hours on end can really wear you down. Why not add some new features to make the day a little easier on you? To make it even easier here is a list of our 5 favorite desk additions to improve your personal space.

1. SAD Light

I know you're probably thinking, "I want to hide from the sun in the morning". However, a study conducted by Marla Paul found that office workers with more light exposure had longer sleep duration, better sleep quality, more physical activity and better quality of life compared to office workers with less light exposure in the workplace. That being said, If you are not sitting close to a window you should really think about investing in a SAD Light.

If you don’t want to add more light, opt for adding a touch of the outdoors. Small plants or succulents are a cheap way to boost your everyday mood. This is because seeing nature and greenery helps us to feel more relaxed and calm. Indoor plants are also known to improve concentration and mood, increase productivity, and reduce stress levels. Not to mention, plants with broad leaves help to regulate humidity. If your office or work space doesn’t have adequate light for a plant to live, there’s still options. Air plants and succulents require minimal or no light at all and little to no effort to succeed.

2. Gaming Keyboard & Mouse

Have you ever thought about changing up the thing you use the most at your desk? Many of us haven't, but now might be the time to make the change. There are three options that really stand out when it comes to making the transition to a gaming mouse and keyboard:

  • The way you look at shortcuts will changed forever - with a gaming keyboard you are able to set up custom shortcuts that you use the most.

  • Your right thumb is an unused asset- with a gaming mouse you have the ability to use the side buttons to increase productivity. Most of the time the buttons that you thumb click are to go back a page in browser or go forward. Although, you have the ability to customize this to your liking.

  • The software is insanely easy to use - Once you get a grip on the basics of the gaming mouse and keyboard you can dive in to custom clicks to open applications with a single click, record complex macros, and add shortcuts that you wish you had before.

3. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Sounds. Particularly those made by other humans, rank as the number one distraction in the workplace. According to workplace design expert Alan Hedge at Cornell, 74% of workers say they face many instances of disturbances and distractions from noise. This is where the noise cancelling headphones come in to save the day. You do not necessarily need to listen to music while wearing the headphones. It is recommended that you listen to white noise or nothing at all to block out unwanted distractions.

4. Fidget Widget

I am not saying that you need to go out and join the fidget spinner trend but it is very helpful to have something on your desk to take your mind off of the daily stress. Previous research has shown that minor distractions can help boost productivity by giving the mind a break, making it easier to pay attention to the task once returning to it. But a key thing that separates a fidget widget from other distractions is that it’s used “for the enjoyment of the experience itself,” not to achieve any particular goal.

5. Essential Oils

Using essential oils has been proven to impact mood and increase concentration. Of course, you have to find the right ones for you. There are many websites and blogs that tell you what oil is good for certain situations or moods. For example, if you are dragging to get to the end of the day use some oils that help with mental clarity such as rosemary, peppermint, lemon, basil, ginger, or cypress.  These oils can help with fatigue and lack of focus.
